Circle of Health Explanation: 

Inner circle: Food

  • Reduce sugar spikes and insulin surges. Every time there is an insulin surge the body decreases testosterone, increases fat retention and decreases Serotonin. Insulin surges make the body fat, tired, and weak.  Then the body craves sugar and caffeine.
  • Inflammation: the wrong food (energy) causes an inflammatory response in the gut. Inflammation causes stress on the entire immune system. Gut >> Brain>> Immune is a triad of system integration. When one is stressed, they all get affected. Inflammation also causes plaguing in the arteries.  WEAK Immune system      >>> Weak Brain
  • PH: balancing the integrity of the cell is good for cellular health.

Many children with autism have food allergies or intolerances and as a result damaged intestinal tracts and in-balanced gut flora. Yeast is formed easily in a weak environment.  Yeast feeds on sugar. It then produces toxic chemicals including alcohol. Alcohol is easily carried in the blood to the frontal lobes of the brain where it inhibits nerve growth and brain development often manifesting as:  

  • deceased attention span
  • disruptive conduct
  • irritability
  • sugar cravings
  • hyperactivity
  • depression
  • reduced fine-motor control and Reasoning

Second ring: Organ/glands 

The patient needs help on the Specific organ and glands that are stressed. The Gut >> Brain >>Immune triad affects Autistic kids the most.  Brain and Gut functions need to be addressed. Studies have shown improving gut health >> improves brain function ….Brain and gut are the two main organs that need to be addressed. The right combination of supplements can improve function. 

Third Ring: Exercise, Sleep, Integrated functional medicine, Vitamins, and Minerals

Exercise:  Studies have shown exercise (vigorous) 20-30 minutes aerobic for 4-5 days a week improves autistic signs and symptoms. Aerobic exercise increases endorphin release which helps reduce inflammation, improves neurotransmitter release, brain function and reduces psychological stress. Credits:

Fourth Ring: Sleep

Restorative sleep: The first 4 hours helps heal the physical body, the second 4 hours helps heal the mental body.  80% of Autistic children have sleep disorders. Signs and symptoms that occur from decreased sleep:  

  • Increase daytime sleeplessness
  • Hyperactive
  • Less attention
  • More aggressive
  • More problematic behavior
  • More inflamed
  • Harder to keep fat off

Helps improve sleep quality and quantity:

  • Probiotics:   Probiotics are supplements that contain healthy microorganisms that populate the digestive tract.  Good bacteria and other healthy microbes are essential for healthy digestion. Probiotics also regulate inflammation and immune function.  Evidence is now pointing to inflammation as a causative factor in autism and ADHD.  Probiotics and healthy digestion are very important in decreasing inflammation that can impact language, social and cognitive development.
  • Vitamin D:  Vitamin D is not a vitamin but instead is a powerful steroidal hormone. Its active form enhances immune cells’ creation of antimicrobial proteins. Several findings suggest that low vitamin D levels (in mothers during pregnancy and in infants) may affect the risk of autism:
  • Dark skin is a risk factor for the development of autism. Those with dark skin produce less vitamin D from sunlight.
  • Low maternal vitamin D level is a risk factor for premature delivery. The risk of autism increases with each week a baby is born early.
  • Maternal seafood consumption during pregnancy may lower the baby’s risk of autism. Coldwater ocean fish are a good source of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Both are important for brain health.

Anti-Inflammatory Actions  

  • Some believe that autism is a disease of neuro-inflammation. According to scientific research vitamin D has profound anti-inflammatory actions. Experimental models show both direct and indirect anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin D involving both arms of the immune system (innate immunity and adaptive immunity).
  • Recent research reveals that activated vitamin D exhibits multiple anti-inflammatory effects. For example, vitamin D inhibits the synthesis and biological actions of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, which are elevated in autism. Vitamin D also exerts anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B, which is involved in abnormal signaling in autistic brains.

Role Of Vitamin D In Autism  

  • Vitamin D inhibits the synthesis and biological actions of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, which are elevated in autism.
  • Several autoantibodies to the brain have been identified in autistic children, causing some to believe that many cases of autism are autoimmune.
  • Research has shown that high levels of certain brain-antibodies are associated with low vitamin D status.
  • Vitamin D upregulates neutrophils, the family of proteins that induce the development, function, and survival of nerve and brain cells, up to 5-fold.
  • Vitamin D stimulates the production of glutathione and several other antioxidant and detoxification enzymes.
  • Even though there are no studies proving the benefits of vitamin D in autism specifically, the proven safety and benefits of vitamin D, added together with the fact that vitamin D has been shown to have a beneficial effect on many of the mechanisms of action that underlie autism, make vitamin D a smart option for children with autism.

The risk of autism could be lowered significantly by women using vitamin D supplements before conception, during pregnancy, and after birth. Research suggests that pregnant and nursing women require 5000 IU (150 mcg)/day of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) during pregnancy and lactation for best pregnancy outcomes and in order to give the infant enough vitamin D3 during nursing. Omega 3Fatty acids/Fish oils are essential for the development and function of the brain.  Omega-3 fatty acids are popular nutritional supplements and widely considered safe.  

  • Several very small studies have suggested that omega-3 fatty acid supplements may reduce autism-related symptoms such as repetitive behavior and hyperactivity, as well as improve socialization.
  • In 2011, for example, a pilot study funded by Autism Speaks enrolled 27 children, ages 3 to 8, diagnosed with ASD and hyperactivity. Some of the children were given 1.3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids each day, disguised in a pudding cup. The other children received the pudding without the supplement. Over the course of 12 weeks, those who received omega-3 fatty acids showed significantly greater improvements on a validated measure of hyperactivity (an improvement of 2.7 vs. 0.3 points on the Aberrant Behavior Checklist).
  • PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE:  This is a naturally occurring phospholipid that is especially concentrated in the brain, where it works to manage cortisol levels and to increase brain function, memory and concentration. Phosphatidylserine will help promote brain health in patients with improved cognitive function.

Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy Overview 

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) works as its name implies – hyper (more of) and baric (pressure) and in fact, that is how it works. It is the increased pressure of the gas we breathe every day that can signal the DNA in our cells to perform healing tasks that the body normally can’t do. Ground zero for this activity is the mitochondria, which are the little organelles inside of our cells that convert oxygen and sugar into the gasoline the cells run on (ATP) – this is called cellular respiration. It doesn’t take much to knock mitochondria off-line and then that cell can’t perform the job it was assigned. So, be it oxygen deprivation, external toxic exposure, or a hyper-immune reaction to an infection or a vaccine the mitochondria will be damaged. We know how Hyperbaric therapy works – it works by reviving the little mitochondria and causes mitochondrial biogenesis so that if you need more mitochondria in your neurons more of them will form. It is interesting to note that the reason the ketogenic diet helps patients with certain types of neurological problems is that ketone bodies help support mitochondrial function. Hyperbaric therapy is the most effective way to do this. It is that simple – this is not rocket science, but it is non-invasive brain repair. As long as supportive biomedical interventions are taking place at the same time, be that detoxification, the appropriate diet for that child (GF/SF/CF, the SC diet or the GAPS diet, etc.), the appropriate supplements are on board, (folinic acid, B12, ALA, glutathione, etc.), foods the child is allergic to are eliminated and any infectious issues are being dealt with (such as yeast, viral load, Lyme, Mycobacterium, etc.) then hyperbaric therapy can commence. Hyperbaric therapy is not a substitute for a comprehensive bio-medical intervention strategy, and again alone it is not a cure, but it can be an important addition to the overall treatment plan. Hyperbaric therapy is perhaps the safest procedure in medicine at the pressures used to treat brain injuries. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is prescribed by a physician based on that patient’s need. Typically for Autism Spectrum issues combined with other co-morbid medical conditions therapies are typically prescribed in 1-hour increments once full pressure is obtained. Treatment length varies by case. Typically, treatments are between 20 – 80 separate appointments.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapies are more efficacious to be performed in sequential days. Doctors will work with patients to evaluate individual needs and come up with a treatment plan.  Each treatment plan varies. This therapy could be prescribed in groups. For example, a doctor may prescribe three separate 20 treatment sessions as part of a treatment plan.
